66 Hammersmith Road, West Kensington

We are delighted to announce that our design proposal for the redevelopment of 66 Hammersmith Road  for Big Yellow Self Storage has been submitted to the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham for planning approval.  The completed development will be Big Yellow’s flagship store with ten storeys of self-storage, affordable workspace, community space, enhanced public realm and soft landscaping.   The development will be highly sustainable and has been designed to meet objectives set out in Big Yellow’s corporate ESG strategy.

The site is located adjacent to Kensington Olympia where construction of a new theatre is underway alongside refurbishment and extension of the LGII Olympia building but 66 Hammersmith Road has a rich and fascinating history in its own right.  Formerly the headquarters of J Lyons & Co, Cadby Hall (as it was known) was the site of the creation of LEO – the world’s first business computer in the early 1950s.  To commemorate this extraordinary achievement, Big Yellow commissioned renowned artist Kerry Lemon to create a piece of public art which celebrates the Lyons Company and LEO’s connection to the site.  The artwork will be embossed into the fabric of the new building as a permanent reminder of what took place there.  You can find out more about LEO from this short Heritage Lottery funded film:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rzu68nRVwtE
